Shirley Ruth Brown

ASHLAND – Shirley Ruth (Sawyer) Brown, 96, died Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the Lydia Taft House in Uxbridge.  She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Wallace Brown.  She is survived by two children, Steven H. Brown of Milford, and Linda J. Whiting of Millville; three grandchildren, Janet, Jeff, and Michael; and a great-grandson, Liam.  She was predeceased by two children, Richard W. Brown Jr. and Marilyn “Muffy” J. Brown; a brother, Richard Sawyer; and three sisters, Charlotte Devine, Virginia Coombs, and Sandra Bogus.  She was born in Framingham, daughter of the late Vincent Metcalf and Evelyn (Hammond) Sawyer, and lived in in Framingham, Ashland, and Milford, before recently moving to Uxbridge.  She graduated from Framingham High School in 1944 and attended Holliston Junior College.

Mrs. Brown was a bookkeeper in the accounting department at Babson College for 15 years, retiring in 1996.  In addition, she worked at Marconi’s Restaurant in Framingham.  She was a former member of the Park Street Baptist Church in Framingham.  She loved the theater and participated in a local theater group when she was a teenager.  She was a member of a widow’s group in Holliston, which became a social group for her throughout her life.

A private graveside service will be held at Wildwood Cemetery in Ashland.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Macular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515.
