NORTH OXFORD - Robert Lee Merriam, 94, of Merriam District, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, after a short illness. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Winifred Lillian (Davis) Merriam of North Oxford; two children, James Merriam and his wife Linda Merriam of Harwich, and Linda Karellas and her husband Dr. Andrew Karellas of Oro Valley, AZ; four grandchildren, Carrie Merriam LeBlanc, Joshua Merriam, Kristen Sherman, and Heather Karellas; one great-grandson, Mattie Merriam; and two step great-grandchildren, Deven and Riley LeBlanc. He was born on the family homestead in North Oxford, son of the late William Ralph and Carrie (Lee) Merriam, was a lifelong resident of North Oxford. He attended Worcester Boys Trade High School in Worcester, and received recognition from Governor Paul Cellucci at Union Station as a high school graduate. He was a U.S. Army Air Force Veteran of World War II.
Mr. Merriam worked at Morgan Construction in Worcester for over 30 years, retiring in 1987. He attended Greenville Baptist Church and North Oxford Baptist Church. Mr. Merriam was a member of the Holiday Rambler Trailer Club and the North American Family Camping Association – Worcester Chapter. He was a member of the Oxford Lodge of Masons, the Morgan Retirees Group, the Greendale Men’s Club, and the American Legion Post 462.
A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Military burial will follow at Gore Cemetery in North Oxford. Calling hours are Saturday from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Greenville Baptist Church, P.O. Box 396, Rochdale, MA 01542.
