JACKSONVILLE, FL – Paul R. Riopel, 70, died peacefully on Monday, January 30, 2017, at his home in Jacksonville, FL, after a courageous battle with ongoing health issues.
He will be affectionately missed and remembered by his life partner of 35 years, E. Christopher Collis; two daughters, Kimberly Scherte and Kerry Cardarelli; his brothers and sisters, Warren Riopel and his wife Verna of Texas, Walter Riopel and his wife Martha of Connecticut, Barbara Thayer of Holden, Joanne LaCourse and her husband Roger of Dudley, and Carol Brodeur and her husband Paul of Charlton. He was predeceased by three brothers, Nelson Jr., Douglas, and Robert Riopel; and a sister, Suzan Tallman. Paul was born in Worcester to the late Nelson and Helen (Mason) Riopel Sr.
Paul was in the first graduating class of Girls Trade, which included males. This culinary experience lead him to a successful and happy career in restaurant management which took him from Worcester to California, and eventually Florida.
Even though he lived in different states, he never stopped being an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan. Later in life he enjoyed marker art, drawing with pencil, a lively political conversation, and having his dog, Jackson, spend hours by his side.
Paul was extremely fortunate when he was able to receive a much-needed organ transplant. He spent the next ten years taking great care of the gift that he received. His loved ones will be forever grateful to his donor and the excellent care he received at the Mayo Clinic.
