Mercedes Mejia

OXFORD – Mercedes Mejia, 95, of Federal Hill Road, died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 29, 2015. She is survived by two daughters, Camila Velez of Oxford and Eugenia Velez of Brussels, Belgium; five grandchildren, Pacho Velez of New York City, NY, Gabriel Velez of Chicago, IL, Kira Coene of Eastford, CT, Manuela Moutafian of Brussels, Belgium and Paula Moutafian of Brussels, Belgium; and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by a son, Lorenzo Velez; and five brothers, Jose, Jorge, Bernardo, Guillermo, and Hernando Mejia Salazar. She was born in Manizales, Colombia, daughter of the late Manuel Mejia Jaramillo and Cecilia Salazar Jaramillo and lived in New York City, Fairfield and Eastford CT, before moving to Oxford in 2007.

Mercedes Mejia was the director for the Colombia Information Service for 25 years, retiring over 30 years ago. Previously, she was a reporter for Life Magazine.

No funeral service is planned and burial will be private. Paradis-Givner Funeral Home in Oxford is assisting with arrangements.
