Mary Grondine

June 23, 1930 — November 10, 2016

OXFORD – Mary Roselma (Credit) Grondine died Thursday, November 10, 2016, surrounded by her family and children. She was born to Henry and Jesse Credit on June 23, 1930, in Millbury, Massachusetts. In 1948, she graduated from Millbury High School and worked as a bank teller. On August 27, 1949, she married Albert Francis Grondine, who would be her husband for the next sixty-four years until his death in 2013, and together they had four children. They settled in Oxford, Massachusetts, in 1956.

After being a stay-at-home mother for seventeen years, Mary again became a bank teller in 1967 at the Webster Five Cent Savings Bank in Oxford. Despite never attending college, she rose to the position of branch manager in Oxford. While a manager, she oversaw the complete renovation of that branch in the late 1980’s, all at a time when banking management was a largely male enclave. She retired from banking in August of 1995. The interior walls of the Oxford branch still bear the art she chose.

Even with the demands of a fulltime job and four children, Mary found the time to be involved in her community. She was a longtime member and treasurer of the Oxford Woman’s Club and served on the Board of Directors of Hubbard Regional Hospital in Webster. Mary was also a member of St. Roch’s Church, where she once taught Sunday school. She was ever determined to educate herself and read everything from classic fiction and nonfiction, to art and music appreciation, to the Wall Street Journal. There was no arena too big for her to conquer.

She leaves her surviving children, Richard and wife Carolyn Grondine of Dudley, Diane (Grondine) Saad and her husband George of Dudley, and Elaine (Grondine) Kennedy of New Hampshire; her grandchildren, Steven and Michael Grondine, Jennifer (Grondine) Williams, Michelle Grondine, Brian Saad and Shawn Kennedy; six great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Anne Boudreau of Florida; and two brothers, Richard Stockwell of Oxford and Alan Credit of Webster. Her son Robert Grondine, and her grandson Adam Saad, predeceased her.

A funeral will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, from Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Roch’s Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow at North Cemetery in Oxford. Calling hours are Tuesday, November 15, 2016, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
