PITTSFIELD – John A. Tufo, 88, formerly of Pittsfield, died Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Harrington HealthCare at Webster. He is survived by three children, Richard D. Tufo and his wife Elizabeth of Sutton, Eric Tufo of New Hampshire, and Pamela McCall and her husband Danny of Tennessee; his special friend, Betty Lacy; four grandsons, three granddaughters, six great granddaughters, one great grandson, one great-great grandson, and multiple nephews and nieces. He was born in Revere, son of the late Antonio and Johanna Maria (Corsini) Tufo. He graduated from Revere High School in Revere in 1946 and attended Berkshire Community College where he studied accounting. Later, he attended the Ward School of Airline Training in Worcester, where he was awarded a certificate as a graduate of Airline Traffic and Flight Operations in 1954. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, serving as a cryptographer.
Mr. Tufo owned and operated Berkshire Car Livery in Pittsfield for 25 years, retiring in 2006. Previously, he was a transportation agent and station manager at Mohawk Airlines in Pittsfield and worked at General Electric. In his retirement, he was a driver for Elder Services of Berkshire County, where he also served elder meals and worked in the kitchen. He was a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels and drove for the senior center transporting the elderly to doctor appointments.
Mr. Tufo was a member of the V.F.W. in Pittsfield and Ocala, FL. He was selected as Community Service Volunteer in Pittsfield in 2003 and 2004. He also volunteered at the Pittsfield Visitor Center and served in the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Pittsfield.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 8, 2016, at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Burial will be private at a later date. There are no calling hours.
