CHARLTON – Irving Thompson Nicoll, 90, of Hanson Road, died Saturday, March 23, 2024, in his home. He was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Ilse A. (Bender) Nicoll, who died in 2021. He is survived by two children, Mary Ann H. Abasciano and her husband Steven of Charlton, and Bruce A. Nicoll and his wife Diane of Clarksville, TN; four grandchildren, Andrea Balcunas and her husband Joshua of Charlton, Krista Howard and her husband Timothy of Rutland, Stephanie Nicoll and her husband Dr. David Gaines of Colorado, and Jennifer Hardwick and her husband Nick of Clarksville, TN; and seven great-grandchildren, Kennadie Balcunas, Nicole Balcunas, Davina Howard, Brynn Howard, T.J. Howard, John Ryan Hardwick, and Ryder Hardwick.
He was born in Dundee, Scotland, and lived in Shrewsbury and Hudson before moving to Charlton in 2009. He graduated from Boston Latin High School attended Bentley School of Finance, before receiving a bachelor’s degree from Clark University in Worcester. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany.
Mr. Nicoll was an accountant at State Mutual in Worcester for 29 years, retiring in 1991. Previously, he worked at Corning Glass for several years. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Stella Chapter in Auburn, and was a member of the General Grand Chapter Committee. He was a member of the Matthew John Whittall Lodge of Masons in Shrewsbury, and a member of the Aleppo Shriners in Springfield.
After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Nicoll bought a motorhome and traveled throughout the country. They settled in a retirement community in Claremont, Florida, where he worked for several years at Sea World.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 1, 2024, at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Burial will be private at a later date. A calling hour will be held on Monday from 10-11 a.m. at the funeral home prior to the service.
