George Polis

December 3, 1928 — August 14, 2013

Oxford- George T. Polis, 84, of Walnut Street, died Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Overlook Masonic Health Center in Charlton. He is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Catherine (Reilly) Polis. George attended Worcester Trade School in the 1940's where he studied welding and played football, basketball, baseball and hockey (goalie). He made All City Baseball in 1946. He was a loyal son, grandson, nephew to the Mooney and Spooner families of Worcester and Oxford. After trade school George was a welder, sheet metal worker, and iron worker. He then went to work at GM in Framingham as an iron worker and worked his way up to manager of the 26 mile assembly line building cars. George had a 30 year career at GM and helped many Oxford residents get employment there. George continued to play baseball and hockey in industrial leagues and softball. He enjoyed fly fishing, tying flies, and ice fishing. He was a referee and umpire for youth sports, helped organize the Babe Ruth League in Oxford, coached JV basketball at Marianhill High School in Southbridge, was chairman of the Oxford Democratic Committee, a board member of the Singletary Rod and Gun Club, and was involved in organizing the annual Oxford Field Day. He was a member of the Whitinsville Country Club where he played golf for 25 years and was a board member. He would pick up some of the elderly members and transport them back and forth so they could continue to play golf. George was loyal, believed in the truth, stood tall in adversity, and was a man's man. George leaves 5 beloved children, David, William, Richard, Susan , and Christine. He was the beloved grandfather of 11 and great grandfather of 9, who he taught to compete, golf, fish, and laugh, as well as instilling a passion for the Patriots, Celtic, Red Sox and Bruins. He took great interest in all of their lives and attended any event or sport they were involved in, even when he was ill. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Roch's Church, 332 Main St., Oxford on Friday, September 13, 2013. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Overlook Masonic Home Employee Fund, 88 Masonic Home Road, Charlton, MA 01507, to honor all the staff who gave George love and care with dignity at his most difficult time.
