Fredric Herbert Montfort, 90, formerly of Glen Head, NY, and Thompson, CT, died June 13, 2010, at his home in Cheshire, CT. Fredric was born in Glen Cove, NY to Frederick and Elsie Montfort. He graduated from Roslyn High School and Dartmouth College. After graduating from Dartmouth, he entered Columbia Law School. During law school he entered the Coast Guard Reserve and served in WWII. While in the service he married Ethelinda Bartlett of Webster, MA. Upon discharge, he returned to Columbia Law School to complete his education. He was admitted to the Bar in 1948. He started practicing law in New York City and Long Island with Hobart Marvin. In 1969, the firm became Montfort, Healy, McGuire, and Salley. The name of the firm remains the same to this day and is located in Garden City, NY. He retired in 1990 and moved with his wife to Thompson, CT. During his law practice on Long Island, he was a member of the Nassau Bar Association (one time director), Nassau Suffolk Trial Lawyers Association (founder and chairman), American Bar Association, New York State Bar Association, American Board of Trial Advocates, New York State Bar Foundation, International Association of Insurance Counsel, and The American College of Trial Lawyers. Fredric had a love of gardening. In each of his homes he had beautiful flower beds including spectacular rose bushes. He also grew a variety of vegetables and loved to share them with family and friends. While in Thompson, he belonged to the Thompson Historical Society, the Improvement Society, and Learning in Retirement at Quinebaug Valley Community College, and was a member of Christ Church in Pomfret, CT. Fredric is survived by his wife of 66 years; children, Fredric Craigin (Judith Altman) Montfort of New York City, NY and Bozeman, MT, Linda (the late John) Gremelsbacker of Cheshire, CT, Lucia (Edward) Sherman of Belle Mead, NJ; five grandchildren, Laura Gremelsbacker (Doug) Lombardo, Lynsey Gremelsbacker (Chris) McCloskey, Courtney Gremelsbacker (Dominic) Proto, Corey Sherman and Casey Sherman; five great-grandchildren, John Andrew Lombardo, Charles William Lombardo, John Murphy McCloskey, Caroline Bartlett McCloskey, and Luke Fredric McCloskey. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), CT Regional Office, 2139 Silas Deane Hwy, Rocky Hill, CT 06067-2339.
