F. Genander

NORTH OXFORD – F. Russell Genander, 92, of Southbridge Road, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 30, 2008, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Anna B. (Szamocki) Genander of North Oxford, who died on December 29, 2007. He is survived by his daughter, Janice A. Gagner and her husband Ronald of North Oxford; his granddaughter Christine Gagner; his grandson Craig Gagner and his wife Michelle; his brother Lawrence H. Genander of Indian Orchard; and many nephews and nieces. He was born in North Oxford, the son of the late Max and Jennie (Russell) Genander, and lived in Worcester before moving to North Oxford 65 years ago. He graduated from South High School in Worcester, where he excelled as a baseball pitcher and earned the nickname "Lefty." He later graduated from Becker College in Worcester, majoring in business and journalism. While in college, he played baseball for the Blackstone Valley Industrial League. Russ worked most of his life in the automotive parts business, retiring from General Automotive in Worcester as an inventory manager in 1986. Among his accomplishments, he coached the Oxford V.F.W. basketball team to a winning season in 1948 and also coached other local baseball teams. He was an avid fresh and salt water fisherman and enjoyed his summer home on Cape Cod. Russ enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all. The family would like to thank all the medical staff for the comforting care they gave to both Russ and his family. A funeral will be held at 8 a.m. on Saturday, February 2, 2008, from Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 9 a.m. at St. Ann's Church, 652 Main St., North Oxford. Burial will follow at St. Roch's Cemetery, Oxford. Calling hours are Friday, February 1, 2008, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
