FISKDALE - Edward J. Deras, 93, of Heritage Green Drive, died peacefully on Saturday, August 22, 2015, at Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in West Brookfield. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Frances J. (Rucci) Deras of Fiskdale; two sons, Terry Knudsun and his wife Carol of Texas and Bernard G. Deras of Putnam, CT; a daughter, Sharon A. Deras-DiRocco of East Greenwich, RI; a stepson, Dominic Trapasso and his wife Debbie of Rutland; two stepdaughters, Raffaela Viera and her husband Frank of Virginia, and Marianne Trapasso and her partner Steve Duquette of Webster; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces. He was predeceased by his first wife, Nina M. (Lambert) Deras; a daughter, Karen Deras; and three brothers, William Chaplis, Albert Deras, and Ben Deras. He was born in Worcester, son of the late Joseph and Mary (Chaplis) Deras, and lived in Sutton and Sturbridge before moving to Fiskdale 11 years ago. Mr. Deras was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After sustaining injuries and becoming honorably discharged, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Air Force and served during the Korean War. He was a life member of the Charles F. Minney V.F.W. Post 3329 in Millbury. Mr. Deras was an engineer at Texas Instruments in Attleboro for 10 years, retiring in 1984. In his younger years, he was an officer with the Massachusetts State Police and was a part-time officer with the Sutton Police Department. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting. The family would like to thank the staff at the Quaboag Health Center for their exceptional care during his time there. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 28, 2015, at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Burial will follow at West Sutton Cemetery in Sutton. Calling hours are Thursday, August 27, 2015, from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Quaboag Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, 47 E. Main St., West Brookfield, MA 01585.
