WEBSTER - Doris M. (McCarthy) Shockett, 81, died Monday, November 9, 2009, in her home surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen Forrester and her husband Barry of Webster, her daughter-in-law Linda Shockett of Sumter, SC; two sisters, Gloria Costello and her husband James of Garden Grove, CA, and Mrs. Patricia Wolgat of Menifee, CA; four grandchildren, Crystal, Barry, Heather, and Brandon; and one great grandchild, Camden. She was predeceased by her son Joseph A. Shockett of Sumter, SC, who died in 2004, and two brothers, James and John, both of Worcester. She was born in Worcester, the daughter of the late James L. and Martha (McKinney) McCarthy, and lived in Worcester before moving to Webster in 1980. She attended St. John's Grammar School and put herself through nursing school while raising her children. Mrs. Shockett was a nurse at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester for over 30 years, retiring in 1990. After retirement, she worked for several area doctors and nursing homes. She loved gardening and spent all of her time growing beautiful flowers that surround her home. She loved to crochet and made gorgeous blankets that she shared with her loved ones. She was an avid follower of the Red Sox and Patriots, and her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. Some of her fondest memories are times spent growing up with her siblings and the bonds formed with the Rafferty and Sheenan families. A private graveside service will be held at St. Anthony's Cemetery in Webster. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, MA 01608. Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, is directing the arrangements.
