OXFORD – Barbara S. (Smith) Day, 77, of Dudley Road, died Wednesday, October 23, 2024, in her home after a long illness. She is survived by her son, Justin A. Day and his wife Heather of Worcester; two brothers, Robert F. Smith Jr. and his wife Doris of West Haven, CT, and Richard D. Smith of East Haven, CT; her stepbrother, James Hennessey and his wife Katherine of Needham; two nieces, Heather L. Smith of Milford, CT, and Melissa Day of Knoxville, TN, and her life partner, Nicholas McGray of Oxford.
She was born in New Haven, CT, daughter of the late Robert F. and Ruth M. (Munck) Smith, and was raised in Hamden, CT. She moved to Oxford 53 years ago. She graduated from Hamden High School and received her bachelor's degree from the Fones School of Dental Hygiene at the University of Bridgeport.
Ms. Day was a dental hygienist throughout her life, most recently working for Dr. Solomon in Putnam, CT, prior to retirement. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Oxford, where she was member of the handbell choir, played the piano, and sang in the choir. She was a member of the American Guild of English Handbell Ringers.
Ms. Day was a member of the Quinebaug Valley Singers, the Midstate Trail Committee, the American Dental Hygiene Association, and the Green Mountain Club, where she served as Worcester Section President. She was a leader of the Campfire Boys and Girls when her son was young. She enjoyed being outdoors, especially canoeing, hiking, and camping.
A memorial service will be held at 12 noon on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the First Congregational Church, 355 Main St., Oxford. A celebration of her life be held immediately following the service in the church vestry.
