OXFORD / FORT MYERS, FL -- Andrew D. Hammond, 85, of North Fort Myers, FL, passed away on July 25, 2013. He was born in Whitinsville, the son of Agnes and Earl Hammond. He is survived by his loving family, wife of 62 years Millie; sons Michael and wife Pauline of Spokane Washington, Andrew II and wife Wendy of Nahant, Todd and wife Susan of Oxford; 5 grandchildren, Julianne, Brian, Jason, Jessica and Gregory & wife Kate; and 2 great grandchildren, Olivia and Wyatt. He graduated from Northbridge High School in 1946 and enlisted in the Navy serving until October 1952 aboard the U.S.S. Antietam CV36, the U.S.S. Saipan CVL 48 as Radioman and during the April 1948 Atomic Bomb tests, and aboard the USS Barioka CVE 115 in the Marshall Islands. Following his honorable discharge, he joined the Marine Corp Reserve in 1956 serving 4 years, then joined the U.S. Navy Reserve in 1962 serving on various destroyers out of Newport, Rhode Island. He retired from the Navy Reserve as Chief Radioman in 1988. He began work with the New England Telephone Company as an equipment installer - his responsibilities grew to the Southbridge Area Forman then to Toll Engineer in Framingham, retiring in 1987. He and Millie moved to North Fort Myers FL and lived there for 21 years. Andrew was an avid History buff and loved to recount events and dates to his children, friends and family. He loved to take his boys fishing and golfed in later years. He was asked to try out for the St. Louis Cardinals as pitcher, but joined the Navy. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made to The Wounded Warrior's Fund. Burial will be at sea.
