OXFORD - Alexander R. Gilchrist, 87, of Woodland Drive, died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Harriet A. (McLean) Gilchrist of Oxford; a daughter, Christina St. Martin and her husband Gerald of Oxford; three daughters-in-law, Marilyn Gilchrist of Plymouth, Paula Gilchrist of Holden, and Catherine Gilchrist of Oxford; six grandchildren, Jessica M. Gilchrist of Watertown, Heather M. Davis and her husband Jonathan of Oxford, Elizabeth Gilchrist and Scott St. Martin, both of Brooklyn, NY, Robert Gilchrist of Dedham, and Olivia Aziz of Holden; one great-grandson, Nathan Davis, and nephews and nieces in Scotland, Canada, and Australia. He was predeceased by two sons, Alexander Gilchrist of Carver, who died in 2006, and Grant M. Gilchrist of Oxford, who died in 1992. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of the late Alexander and Mary (McMaster) Gilchrist, and served in the British Royal Air Force during World War II in North Africa. Mr. Gilchrist was a finished carpenter. He worked for Johnson Supply in Spencer and Ziff Paper Company in Worcester. He enjoyed gardening, singing, golfing, and was an avid soccer and hockey fan. He enjoyed traveling with his wife throughout the country in their camper during retirement. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. A funeral service will be held privately for family and close friends. There are no calling hours and burial will be at a later date at North Cemetery, Oxford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701. Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, is assisting the family with arrangements.
